The Apple MacBook Air 11 is a tiny, lightweight laptop that’s surprisingly capable. It’s barely bigger than an iPad, yet it’s a fully-fledged Mac computer with a backlit keyboard and a multitouch trackpad that provides superb comfort and ease of use. It’s the perfect computer for people who want to be able to take their work with them wherever they go, but don’t have the space or weight of a bigger laptop.
The first generation of the MacBook Air introduced a thin, light design that offered excellent performance and battery life for a portable device. Since then, the Air’s processor speeds, graphics capabilities and memory have all improved, making this machine even more appealing if you’re looking for a small, versatile computer.
If you’re in the market for a MacBook Air, you may be curious about whether this fifth-generation model has made any improvements over its predecessors. We’re happy to report that this machine is almost exactly the same as its predecessors and is still the best ultraportable on the market.
It boots up in 19 seconds, resumes from sleep instantly and completes our File Transfer Test in just a minute. The flash storage also does a great job of keeping everything feeling snappy and responsive. The one exception is that the new Air doesn’t offer as much power as some other competing devices, and our review unit was only equipped with 4GB of RAM, which isn’t upgradable.
This isn’t a deal-breaker, though, as you can simply add an external hard drive if more storage is a priority. The only other minor drawback is that the display isn’t as sharp as many of today’s top laptops. This is only a minor concern for most, as the screen does a fantastic job of rendering web pages and other content, but it’s something to keep in mind if you plan on using your MacBook Air to play games or edit video.
If you’re in the market for reconditioned MacBook Air models, you should know that these machines aren’t as cheap as some other options available. This is due to the fact that Apple isn’t manufacturing these computers anymore, so they are being sold at a slight loss in order to cover production costs and inventory storage. This isn’t a bad thing, as it means you can score an awesome device at a more affordable price. Be sure to shop around for the best deals before you make a purchase, as the differences in pricing are often very minimal.
