Apple’s MacBook Pro 16.2 is a remarkable laptop with an impressive range of features. However, it is not without its issues. The notch at the top of the display has proved divisive and it can cover elements of the menu bar when you are using macOS in full screen mode.
Other than that, though, there is little to complain about. The new MacBook Pro is a worthy upgrade to the previous model, with faster processors, improved graphics, more ports and a quieter keyboard. It’s not the most powerful laptop around but it has enough power to do just about anything.
The most significant change is under the hood, where the 2023 MacBook Pro uses Intel’s new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips. These provide more CPU and GPU power than the 2021 models. The M2 Pro has up to a 12-core CPU while the M2 Max offers up to a 19-core CPU. Both chips also offer 96GB of unified memory.
Combined with the new high-performance Radeon Pro 550 GPU, these chips offer a massive boost in performance and gaming capability. They also deliver much better battery life than the older 2021 MacBook Pro. Despite the higher performance and graphics capabilities, the new MacBook Pro 16.2 is lighter than its predecessor. This makes it a lot easier to use on the go.
For pros, the return of the MagSafe connector and more ports is welcome. The laptop has three Thunderbolt 4 capable USB-C slots and an SD card slot, as well as a headphone jack and a full-size HDMI port. It also supports fast charging, with a 100W charging capacity when you plug in the MagSafe adapter and up to 140W when used with an external power source.
This is a great upgrade, but it’s worth noting that the ports are still limited compared to other notebooks. For example, the SD card slot only supports slow UHS-II speeds while the HDMI port is version 2.0 rather than the more modern 2.1.
Another big bonus is the new quad-core i7 processor. This is a major step up in performance from the previous generation and is an important upgrade for anyone who wants to do some serious work or play demanding games. In our testing, the MacBook Pro 16 was able to hit 70 frames per second in Shadow of the Tomb Raider at Quad HD resolution and Ultra settings, which is impressive.
If there was one area where the new MacBook Pro could have been improved, it would be to include a native 4K display. It’s a strange omission for a laptop that is intended to be a creative tool, especially when it costs several thousand dollars. While it is possible to add a high-res display by connecting an external monitor, that’s an extra cost and can reduce battery runtime. It’s a shame because this is a really excellent laptop that has been tarnished by some unfortunate design decisions.
